The crew at Orchid Outriggers met Lexie Brown early
in the summer of 2007. Lexie, a graduate student at the Bren School
of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB, had moved to the
area for the summer, acting as data manager and principal surveyor
for the
Bren School/SLOSEA, Morro Bay Group Project. This project
gathered data and evaluated the recreational use and perception of
the Morro Bay Estuary as it relates to the local business community
and the local environment.
Lexie grew up in southern Florida, earning a B.S.
degree from the University of Miami (Go Canes!) in Marine Science
and Biology. Throughout her undergraduate career, she was engaged in
scientific research concerning tropical coral reefs and seagrass
communities. Before leaving to attend the Bren School, Lexie worked
as the Research and Education Assistant at Central Caribbean Marine
Institute in the Cayman Islands. Pursuing the Coastal Marine
Resources Management specialization at the Bren School, Lexie hopes
to focus on the human dimensions of marine resource management after
graduation.

Lexie paddled with Orchid Outriggers
throughout the summer, giving her the opportunity to
explore all of the estuary's nooks and crannies. She
paddled with us at the Boatsart Festival, spent
many days and evenings on the bay, and eventually
ventured down the coast from Montana de Oro to south of
Point Buchon. Definitely not a fair-weather paddler,
Lexie was ready to go in all conditions - from perfect
to downright ugly. Now when we are down at the bay
contemplating less-than-perfect conditions, the remark,
"Lexie would go!" spurs us on.

The time spent on the bay allowed Lexie to pursue
both her interest in birding and photography. She captured some
great images that very much typify summer on the Morro Bay Estuary.
Here are some of the highlights.
