Belted Kingfisher
Ceryle torquat
The faint, rusty-colored patches on
this bird's flanks identify it as a female. Kingfishers nest in deep
burrows they excavate on the sides of steep banks. To reach into one
of these occupied burrows is a good way to find out just how sharp
and powerful that long beak really is.
