American Avocet and Ring-billed Gull
Recurvirostra americana
Larus delawarensis
American Avocets are truly striking
birds. Rarely seen here mid-summer, a small group of birds, still
showing remnants of breeding plumage, was in the estuary in early
September. By late November the Avocet flock had grown to perhaps a
hundred individuals, all in their stark white and black,
non-breeding plumage. This gull seems to be thinking, "I could look
like that too, if I could just lay off the French fries at
Giovanni's."
