Morro Bay Estuary's Extraordinary Birds
Photographed from Orchid Outriggers

American Avocet and Marbled Godwit
Recurvirostra americana      Limosa fedoa
Long-billed Dowitcher (or possibly Short-billed Dowitcher)
scolopaceus  griseus

Avocets in the foreground browse, while Marbled Godwits sleep, and Dowitchers land to join the sleeping Godwits. This is seen quite often in the salt marsh, a subtle interaction between species - mixed shore birds sleeping while the Avocets provide defacto sentries. In contrast, the Avocets appear to sleep and preen in large flocks of strictly Avocets, with Avocet sentries posted on any flank from which a threat might approach.
