Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias
Morning stretch. As in many birds,
first year mortality is very high in the larger herons. Some sources
put it at about 70%. Herons that survive their first six months can
live long lives. A European Grey Heron, very similar to the North
American Great Blue Heron, banded in Rossiten, Germany, lived for
24.5 years.
