Morro Bay Estuary's Extraordinary Birds
Photographed from Orchid Outriggers

American White Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Part of a small flock of about ten birds which arrived in the estuary mid-August. Large mature birds can have a nine-foot wingspan and weigh over sixteen pounds. White Pelicans don't dive for food, but fish from the surface by dipping their bills, much of the time cooperatively.
