Morro Bay Estuary's Extraordinary Birds
Photographed from Orchid Outriggers

Northern Harrier
Circus cyaneus

Commonly known as a Marsh Hawk, this young bird (dark head and orange breast) has carved him- or herself a comfortable niche in the estuary habitat. Seen daily over the sandspit and the marsh, this bird is not only a very successful hunter, but will harass both the local Peregrine Falcons and Osprey out of their catch.
