Morro Bay Estuary's Extraordinary Birds
Photographed from Orchid Outriggers

Brown Pelican
Pelecanus occidentalis

Truly a flying fossil, unchanged for at least the last million years, fossil remains of Pelecanus occidentalis are plentiful in Pleistocene deposits. Lower Miocene deposits, 20 to 30 million years old, reveal ancient pelican bones so similar to living birds they are placed in the same genus.
