Common Merganser - Mergus merganser
Fall / winter
visitor in small numbers, these diving birds are great underwater
swimmers,
disappearing from view and covering a surprising distance
before bobbing to the surface.
Note the "saw-toothed" bill for
gripping fish.

Surf Scoter - Melanitta perspicillata
Male adult, "all
ahead full" to get away from the pesky photographer and that
infurnal outrigger,
pushing a pretty good bow wave and kicking up
quite a wake. Scoters would rather paddle away
than fly and
seldom
present us with anything other than a "going away as fast as I can"
view.

Truly a unique bill, but it serves the Scoter well.
Colorful and very powerful, it is capable of
ripping limpets, marine
snails and mussels from pilings, which the bird then
swallows -
s
hell and all. Good reason to have a gizzard.

Western Gull - Larus occidentalis
Calm water, calm
gull. Westerns pay very little attention to the canoes unless you
are paddling
away from Giovanni's with a large order of french
fries.
