Surf Scoter
Melanitta perspicillata
Male adult, "all
ahead full" to get away from the pesky photographer and that
infurnal outrigger, pushing a pretty good bow wave and kicking up
quite a wake. Scoters would rather paddle away than fly and seldom
present us with anything other than a "going away as fast as I can"
view.

Truly a unique bill, but it serves the Scoter well.
Colorful and very powerful, it is capable of ripping limpets, marine
snails and mussels from pilings, which the bird then swallows -
shell and all. Good reason to have a gizzard.
