Black-crowned Night Heron
Nycticorax nycticorax
Common in Japan, where the
10th-century Emperor Daigo was so pleased with the beauty and tame
nature of the Black-crowned Night Herons in his new royal gardens,
he elevated the bird to the fifth emperial court rank of "go-i." It
is commonly known as the "go-i" heron in Japan to this day.
